Use the right basket

Most home espresso machines come with two kinds of basket. The dual-wall (pressurized) one is made for pre-ground coffee. The single-wall one is made for beans you grind fresh.

“If you're using pre-ground or stale coffee, pressurized baskets will allow you to extract espresso, whereas a single-walled basket would just produce a watery mess.”

Why illy Classico

These are write-ups, not hands-on tests. They agree that illy is the pre-ground coffee to beat.

“The Italian benchmark pre-ground for espresso - the same Classico blend as the whole bean, ground for a machine.”

Lavazza, if you want to spend less

“Lavazza's 20 oz bag is the value king here, plenty of coffee for daily use without sacrificing too much on quality.”

Want better espresso? Grind fresh

Pre-ground coffee is the easy way in, but it goes stale fast. A grinder and whole beans make a real step up.

“Pre-ground coffee is at its best for 15–30 minutes after grinding. Still acceptable: up to 1 hour. Noticeably stale: within 24 hours.”

Questions people ask

Can I use pre-ground coffee in a Breville Bambino or Barista Express?

Yes. Use the dual-wall basket that comes in the box. The single-wall basket needs fresh, fine coffee, and pre-ground coffee makes a thin, watery shot in it.

Can I use regular drip coffee in an espresso machine?

It’s too coarse. Water runs through it too fast. Buy coffee labeled for espresso, which is ground much finer.

How long does ground coffee stay fresh?

It starts to fade within hours once the bag is open. Close it tight, keep it cool and dry, and finish it within a week or two.
