Best espresso beans for a Breville: Lavazza Super Crema.

For a Barista Express, Bambino or Bambino Plus, get Lavazza Super Crema. In a 12-bean test on a Barista Express, it was the easiest bean to dial in. It’s $26.99 for 2.2 pounds, about $0.77 an ounce. Why Lavazza Super Crema

Fluent in Coffee pulled more than 200 shots of 12 beans on a Barista Express. Super Crema was the one that worked with almost no fiddling.

“Easily the most forgiving bean I tested. Lavazza Super Crema practically dials itself in on the Barista Express.”

“Because it comes in a nitrogen-flushed bag, you skip the roast-date guessing game that specialty beans demand.”

Skip very oily dark roasts

Shiny, oily beans leave residue on the burrs of the built-in grinder. Over time that can make your dose uneven.

“For the Barista Express, avoid very oily beans as daily beans. The grinder can handle coffee, but oily buildup can make the workflow messier over time.”

“Oily dark roasts clog the Breville grind chute and cause inconsistent dosing – dry medium or medium-dark beans are easier and taste better.”

“Tasted exactly like a Starbucks espresso — meaning burnt, flat, and lacking nuance.”

Buying fresh beans instead?

If you buy from a roaster, look for a printed roast date, not just a best-by date.

“Best window is 7-21 days after roasting. Past 4 weeks, CO2 has largely escaped and you’ll get minimal crema no matter what.”

Questions people ask

Can I use oily beans in a Breville Barista Express?

Now and then, but not every day. Oil builds up on the burrs and in the chute of the built-in grinder. Dry medium or medium-dark beans work best.

How fresh should espresso beans be?

For bags with a roast date, about one to three weeks after roasting is the sweet spot. Lavazza seals its bags, so the roast date matters less.

Do I need different beans for the Bambino?

No. The Bambino has no grinder, so your grinder decides how fine you can go. Any of these beans work. More on the Bambino.
