Tamper size by machine
“Portafilter” is the handle with the coffee basket. The size printed on it isn’t always the size of tamper you need.

Breville doesn’t publish the inside width of its baskets. The 53.3 mm figure comes from accessory makers who measured them. Crema Coffee Products, for example, sells its 53.3 mm tamper as a precision-fit for Breville’s 54 mm baskets. read it
Why not just buy a 54 mm tamper?
The basket is wider at the top than at the bottom. A tamper as wide as the rim can’t reach the coffee evenly, so the grounds pack unevenly and the shot runs through the loose spots. A slightly smaller tamper presses the whole bed flat.
The tamper in the box works fine. Owners upgrade for a heavier, steadier press. A spring-loaded tamper clicks when you’ve pressed hard enough, so every shot gets the same push.
What about the Ninja Luxe Café?
It has a tamping lever built in, so most owners never need a separate tamper. Ninja doesn’t publish its basket size, and we couldn’t confirm the sizes third-party sellers list, so we’re not recommending one.
Other things that fit Breville’s 54 mm portafilter

A 54 mm dosing funnel sits on the basket so grounds don’t spill when you grind into it.

A WDT tool has thin needles you stir through the grounds to break up clumps before tamping.

A bottomless portafilter has no spouts, so you can see if the shot runs unevenly.
